I passed a road crew today getting ready to resurface a chewed up piece of highway. I've been over this particular road hundreds of times and I think this is the third or fourth time they'll have resurfaced. The problem is not the asphalt they're using. It goes much deeper than that. It's the underlying foundation that is weak and unstable. So two options: Slap a fresh coat of asphalt every so often or dig down and re-lay the foundation. Those are the two same options each of us have in a spiritual encounter with God. It can be an emotional encounter that for a time washes over us or an honest exposure to the Grace of God transforming our hearts and minds. The religious of Jesus' day were more concerned with their spiritual appearance than heart change so he spoke these harsh words to them. Matthew 23:27-28 For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. Harsh but true! May it not be true of me! Allowing God to dig deep into my life is a life-long process, sometimes painful, but always lays a firm foundation upon which life's journey is secure.
