In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Last year Americans spent 31.7 billion honoring moms. Then 58 years later in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed legislation designating the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. And last year Americans spent 22.4 billion honoring dads. I don’t want to sound bitter (but maybe I am) 58 years seems a long time to recognize the place of dads in our culture. Maybe it’s because dads have abandoned their place in our culture. The last census (2020) finds 33% of USA children live in fatherless homes. I can say with confidence this is not God’s plan for family. The first mention of father in the Bible is Genesis 2:24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Simply said (and there’s much more to be said) God’s plan for family has always been husband & wife, father & mother. So forget about matching mother’s day spending, give your dad a hug. And dads, even more important, give your kids a hug and whisper that you love them! PK
