We have a hummingbird feeder in our back yard and enjoy watching their antics. If you’ve watched them you’ve taken note of their selfish, protective behavior. Once a hummingbird claims a feeder they stand guard and chase off all others who may want a sip of “their” nectar. Self-preservation. And it’s not just hummingbirds, it’s us too. We might share, once we’ve gotten ours or we willingly sacrifice for those closest to us, but our sin-nature demands self interest first. Jesus redeems our nature through his selfless sacrifice and reorients the repentant toward selfless love. So Apostle Paul writes Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: (Philippians 2:3-5) This is not a lifestyle change, it’s a Jesus heart-mind change that changes my life. PK
