I was sitting near a playground the other day as preschool kids were sliding, swinging and climbing. I kept hearing “mommy look at me” or “mommy come help” and once as a kid fell simply “mommy!” And despite all the mothers having the same name: “mommy”, they never got confused as to the call of their child. I used to call out “mommy”, I’m sure you did too. But somewhere along the way “mommy” became “mom”. Why? I had no change of love or affection, actually an even deeper appreciation, so why the name change? I offer this: we grew up. And as we would swing higher and higher it became our friends we wanted to see us and when we fell we picked ourselves up. We became independent, so “mommy” becomes “mom”. And that’s how it should be from a human development perspective but the opposite from a spiritual perspective. The more childlike we become in dependence on God the more confidence we have to climb even the tallest jungle gym. (Luke 18:17) Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. God is never confused which of his children is calling out to him. Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive. (Psalms 130:2) PK
