Rest Area 08-05-2026

Rest is a fickle word. “Did you get enough rest?” we’re often asked as we crawl out of bed of a morning or even a quick afternoon nap. Even as we answer yes, weariness soon creeps back into our bones. Of-course we need rest, we all do, from the numbness of daily routine, the mental grind of work, the physical requirements of one foot in front of another. Even when traveling we’re offered “rest areas” to relieve the tension of driving and cautioned: “next rest area 83 miles ahead”. We even have “rest rooms”, of which I’ll say noting here. I just returned from a lengthy vacation for which I’m very grateful. Vacation rest from routine and responsibilities is restorative and exhaustive to the point of needing rest from resting. Rest is fickle. So when Jesus says “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28) is Jesus being fickle? Or is his rest one that never creeps back into our bones? PK
