“Sorry, Not-Sorry” That’s a recent Reese’s chocolate-peanut butter add campaign. Of-course it’s not original to them, you and I came up with the idea. Remember that time one of your parents scolded you and said, “now say you’re sorry”. Sorry came out of your mouth, “not-sorry” remained in your heart. That was kid stuff. As we grew into adulthood, we’ve become more creative in our not-sorry posture. I retain the right to “my feelings”, “my actions”. “It’s just my personality”. “They shouldn’t have pushed my buttons”. Let’s stop there and admit it: to say “I’m sorry” is hard. Hard because it means, no matter what anyone else has done, I have to take responsibility for my own actions and words. The biblical word for sorry is repent. When we repent before God not only do we take responsibility but with God’s forgiveness comes the grace to change, become new. Take a minute and read Psalm 51. It’s King David’s prayer of repentance, and ours, when we come to God to say, “I’m Sorry”. PK
