Of course today is the beginning of many St. Patrick day celebrations. There will be parades, parties and lots of green, which if you ignore may result in a pinch. (some of you take offense at that: lighten up!) One of my favorite myths of St. Patrick is of him driving all the snakes out of Ireland. The truth is there never were snakes in Ireland. Most believe the myth refers not to actual snakes but the pagan worship of 5th century Ireland to which Patrick was a missionary. We however do not live in a snake-free world. (and I don’t mean the slithering creatures) We gather in worship in a snake-free zone with believers who have been set free from sin by faith in Jesus, the crucified-resurrected One. We long for others to join us in this sanctuary while outside the doors snakes, some poisonous even to death, continue their tyranny of fear. Have we forgotten the power of God to drive out fear? Like Patrick, let’s leave the sanctuary, taking with us the power of God…For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: (Romans 1:16) PK
