I spent yesterday with our youth group on the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama. It was one of those ideal beach days, calm surf, blue skies, slight breeze. I was sitting on the sand watching people of all ages playing along the shore, bobbing up and down on floaties with the gentle waves (we used noodles), collecting shells for souvenirs. People were happy and content floating, letting the waves take them to shore. It occurs to me this morning how that image describes so many who have both feet on the ground but are floating through life. There’s no real destination in mind, no daily purpose, just the search for a few souvenirs to display. In John 21 several of the disciples were floating in the Sea of Galilee. They’d been floating all night searching for souvenirs of fish but had nothing. You can read the story. I’m just thinking of this part: (John 21:7) As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he jumped into the water. When Peter realized the resurrected Jesus was standing on the shore he jump into the sea and was done with floating, he swam straight to Jesus. Look around today, “It’s the Lord”, leave behind your search for souvenirs and swim to Jesus. PK
