Small talk conversation seems to always include something about the weather: “sure is humid”, “kind’a hot for this time of year”, and so on. One of the recent weather comments I’ve heard is how early the trees seem to be dropping their leaves and needles. One “google” suggestion is that early summer rains allowed the trees to put on more foliage and the late dry heat has the trees under stress. Their answer: drop unnecessary leaves so the roots can nourish. Is there a lesson here? Jesus thought so. (John 15:1-2) “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” The tighter we cling to the unnecessary the more diluted the nourishment of the vine and recoil from the pruning shears. Father, give me honest wisdom to recognize my unnecessary and welcome your pruning. PK
