As I type the parking lot of grocery stores are full, half our schools are empty and the rest will dismiss early, sandbags are being filled along with other precautions as a hurricane threatens. Francine. We name our storms, humanize them. Why? Some say it allows us to take them personally, to regard them as dangerous, enemies, to rationalize their indiscriminate behavior. In Isaiah 40 God names himself a “whirlwind” (tornado) which comes forth to (3) make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Dangerous? Yes. (23) He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. (21-22) Have you not understood since the earth was founded? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. Indiscriminate? NO! (11) He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; (29-31) He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. Let your hope rest in the “whirlwind” of Isaiah. PK
