Why Memorial Day? (Joshua 4:4-7) Joshua called together twelve men, one from each tribe, and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, to serve as a sign among [the tribes of Israel]. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” As a National Holiday, Memorial Day is not about the story of Joshua 4, it’s our story. Those 12 stones were a bridge connecting the children of the future to the wonders of God. The children who were living in the promise land “flowing with milk and honey”. A memorial to say: “remember the God who parted the way to your abundant blessings”. That’s the story our National Memorial Day proclaims! We, the children, living in a land of freedom, prosperity, opportunity, has come at the price of men and women sacrificing their lives so that we may live with abundant blessing. So this Monday let’s remind ourselves and tell the story so that the next generation never forgets. PK
