YET! 10-02-2024

Recent images and the ongoing relief efforts of the aftermath of Helene conjures never forgotten memories for those of us who knew Katrina. I often tell others I never ate better than the first three days after Katrina. No electricity so our neighbors joined us in emptying refrigerators, grilling on the gas bar-b-q, eating, playing cards and hauling debris to the curbs. The weeks that followed were rough, yet… That’s become one of my favorite words: YET. It’s a transition word, a word of hope. It’s used to declare that the present circumstance is not the final word. After decades of slavery and prison imposed on him by the betrayal of his brothers Joseph says to them; “you meant it for harm yet God meant it for good”. The three Hebrew men facing the furnace fire declared “our God is able to deliver but even if he does not yet we will not deny Him”. That imposing mountain sized problem, immovable, yet Jesus says with God nothing is impossible.  So I’ve learned to use the word YET, a lot, leaving space for God to have the final word. So take it from Habakkuk, (3:16-18) Yet I will wait patiently. Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, YET…PK
