One of the benefits of participating in the traditions of the Lenten season is the personal commitment to add or subtract something in our life that focuses our attention on Jesus’ suffering and resurrection. Many find that such discipline can form a habit: a habit that allows the continual formation of Christ Jesus in us. Luke writes of a habit of Jesus: But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. (Luke 5:16) This habit so distinguished Jesus’ relationship with God his followers asked Jesus to teach them this habit. One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, (Luke 11:1) And so the discipline of prayer is vital to the spiritual formation of all Jesus followers. Habits can build and habits can tear down. So scripture points one habit that chips away at our spiritual formation: not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing (Hebrews 10:25) Habits are the accumulation of daily choices. Choose with wisdom.
