I have some experience as a swim instructor, that is I taught my three daughters to swim. I have no specific tutorial techniques, only this: eventually you have to let go and push off into deep water. This came to mind as I was reading the story Mark tells of Jesus in Mark 8. Townspeople bring to Jesus a blind man to be healed. Maybe they just wanted a show or to test Jesus but whatever, Jesus took the blind man away from the crowd outside the city. Jesus added spittle and touched the man’s eyes who opening them could only partially see. Jesus touched his eyes as second time and “Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly”. (Mark 8:25) Was Jesus’ first touch half-hearted, not enough? No, remember the blind man was brought by the crowd. It may not have even been his idea. But the first touch of Jesus offered a hope of complete sight, if the man was willing. You may have had Jesus moments of insight but to see clearly you have to be all in, to push off into the deep ways of faith. That’s called trust. Go deep! PK
